What is a Superfood? – Part Three

Have you had enough of Superfoods yet?  Neither have we!  This week is the third and final part of our blog series focussed on nature’s wonderful Superfoods and their health benefits.  Read on to find out more:

  • Apples: It is true that an apple a day keeps the doctor away…because they are so full of goodness!  Containing the nutritious fibre known as pectin, which helps to keep you fuller for longer and helps your bowel regularity.  The high pectin content of the apple has also been linked to a lower body weight, lower cholesterol an improved mood and improved heart health.   All apples are great source of potassium and Vitamin C – and the more ‘tart’ the apple, the more antioxidant it contains, so choose Granny Smiths a little more often!
  • Sweet Potatoes: These orange vegetables are packed with antioxidants – in fact, one serve of sweet potato gives you your daily dose of Vitamins A and C.  They are also a great source of fibre, magnesium, Vitamin B6, manganese and certain types of antioxidants that are linked to fighting cancer.
  • Oranges: Oranges have always been known to be high in Vitamin C and (due to this) are great for our immune system.  Oranges are also low in fructose and because of this are considered to be Low GI.  As for nutrients, oranges are also a good source of B-group vitamins and soluble fibre.  Studies have linked regular orange consumption to helping reduce cholesterol, keeping the digestive system regular and even boost your mood and mental outlook.
  • Garlic – The superfood list would not be complete with this amazing herb! Garlic contains the antioxidant allicin which has many therapeutic benefits including improving heart health, lowering cholesterol levels and helping to ‘fight’ cancer cells.  It is also a potent immune system stimulant (due to its anti-bacterial & viral properties) and a powerful anti-inflammatory.  Other nutrients with antioxidant properties in garlic include selenium, sulphur, Vitamins B6 and C.  Why wouldn’t you eat this everyday?
