TBL Winner At Risk of Gaining Lost Weight

While I did not watch The Biggest Loser (TBL) this year, I did tune into the finale to see the weight loss results for the contestants.  As usual, they were pretty phenomenal.   However, it was the winners’ result that was amazing; Daniel Jofre (aged 24) lost a staggering 51.6kg in only 12 weeks!  This equates to around 39% of his start weight (see more here:  http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/tv/reality-tv/daniel-jofre-wins-tbl-families-after-shedding-516kg/news-story/f1c282be389ded43af10407c376d8cfa).  While this is impressive, there are a lot of reasons to be concerned for Daniel in his journey to maintain his weight.  The reasons why are outlined below:

The big concern is that Daniel is now on the yo-yo dieting treadmill and it’s all due to the rapid weight loss he encountered on the show – basically, Daniel lost a LOT of weight over the 12 weeks’ that he was on ‘The Biggest Loser’!

Radical weight loss such as this really affects the body’s metabolism.  Daniel has combined a prolonged period of restricted calorie intake with extremely long exercise sessions which resulted in his amazing weight loss results.  Now he is back in the ‘real world’, his opportunities to exercise for long periods of time are much more limited.  With Christmas coming up, he is likely to ‘overindulge’ (and who doesn’t?)  so his body is at risk of ‘hanging onto’ all the extra calories and storing them as fat.  This is because his body just went through a ‘famine’ period, so a sudden ‘feast’ will trigger his body to go into ‘storage’ mode.   This ‘famine-feast’ eating pattern is the perfect recipe for a life-time of yo-yo dieting.

The problem with ‘The Biggest Loser’ is that the contestants rarely maintain their amazing weight loss, simply due to the fact that their strict regime with exercise / diet in the house is almost impossible to replicate in the real world.  So their weight loss success is short-lived due to the contestants going back to their old habits – but hey, it makes for great TV viewing, right?
