Alcohol, Christmas and Your Weight (it isn’t a good combination!) – Part 1

Christmas is less than four weeks away and we all know what that means!  Christmas parties, family catch ups – basically, it is the time of year where you will be most likely to eat and drink to excess.  While you may find it relatively easy to ‘pick out’ healthy foods to eat, you may find it more difficult to curb your alcohol consumption (after all, party season means partying hard, right?).  Drinking alcohol definitely ‘slows down’ the weight loss process:  read below to find out why you should take it easy with the drinks over the festive season:

Alcohol contains only empty calories:  this means that there ARE calories in alcohol however these calories have absolutely no nutritional value (and therefore, have NO benefit to your health).  Not only does alcohol not contain any nutrients, but it can hinder your body’s ability to absorb vitamins and minerals from the food you eat.  This is because alcohol can inflame & irritate your gastrointestinal tract, which them compromises your body’s ability to digest and absorb nutrients from the food you eat.

The other problem with alcohol is the effect it has on your liver.  Your body can’t store alcohol, so it must metabolize it immediately after you drink it.  Your body sends alcohol to the liver, which then produces the necessary chemicals to help break down it down.  So when you drink, your body makes metabolizing alcohol a priority over all other metabolic processes.   This means your body won’t metabolize proteins, carbohydrates and fats as efficiently, so your body is much more likely to store these nutrients as fat.

In a nutshell, alcohol is calorie-laden, has no nutritional value, can cause malnutrition, liver damage (in the long term) and slow down your metabolism…in conclusion, you could say alcohol is a dieting disaster!
