Rules for Winter Weight Loss

Winter weight gain often feels inevitable—it’s amazing how the cooler weather can just make being healthier seem so much harder.  The colder, shorter days make it more difficult to get outdoors and easier to stay glued to the TV.  And the thought of a steaming hot chocolate seems so much more appealing than a glass of water.  This week, I want to lay down some ‘rules’ to keep you on track for the remainder of winter – after all, Spring is around the corner so now is NOT the time to go off the tracks.

Making healthy choices now will ensure you look fabulous by Springtime

Making healthy choices now will ensure you look fabulous by Springtime

  1. Use colder weather and shorter days to try out new indoor activities: If you can’t bear facing the cold air, move your workout indoors. Calorie-burning activities like martial arts, indoor rock walls, pilates and hot yoga are fun ways to move and stay warm.
  2. Pack your plate with protein: If the cold is making your stomach feel empty, you need to get more protein.  Protein is important for keeping you feeling fuller for longer and helps stabilize blood sugar levels.  Even if you have a piece of fruit for afternoon tea, follow it with 5-6 protein packed almonds to ‘slow down’ the digestive process, so you delay the inevitable hunger pangs before dinner.
  3. Always have a glass of water or herbal tea in your hand: Research suggests the some 75 percent of Australians may be chronically dehydrated and the problem is that we often mistake dehydration for hunger. If the thought of water is not terribly appealing, try drinking it hot with a squeeze of lemon juice.  A great drink to have first thing in the morning to flush out your kidneys.
  4. Recommit to your initial goals: Passing on warming treats day in and day out gets boring (and temptation can be hard to resist). In order to keep motivated, you need remind yourself of why you wanted to follow a healthy eating plan in the in the first place.  If you lose your focus, it’s easy to go off the rails.  If you originally committed to losing weight to feel better, improve confidence and/or reverse health problems, you need to remind yourself of this every day.  Put your reason to lose weight in a digital calendar with a daily pop-up message that says something like, ‘I’m eating this way because I want to feel better and lose weight.’  Seeing reminders daily will keep your eye on the prize.
