Do You Live in Australia’s ‘Fattest’ Area?

The National Heart Foundation released some amazing data this week about the regions in Australia that had the highest proportion of overweight people.  The Darling Downs, located about 1.5 hours west of Brisbane, has the dubious honour of having the most obese population in Australia – an amazing 44% of the people who live in this rural area are obese and three-quarters of the people living here do not do enough exercise to be healthy (read more here:  http://www.smh.com.au/national/health/australias-fattest-and-fittest-areas-revealed-20150504-1myxdf.html )

No matter which part of Australia you live in, the growing number of overweight people is a big cause for concern

No matter which part of Australia you live in, the growing number of overweight people is a big cause for concern

While the Darling Downs has the worst health report card, it seems there are other county regions that are not far behind:  in NSW, the Riverina region (which includes Wagga & Griffith) have 33% of the population being obese and in VIC, Shepparton is the most obese region in the state with 36% being in this category.  By contrast, upper socio-economic areas in the suburbs of Sydney and Melbourne have the ‘leanest’ residents, with obesity rates being between 13-14%.

If the Federal Government is serious about reducing the ever-increasing cost of health care, then it seems obvious to me that preventative care needs to happen.  These country areas identified as obesity ‘hot spots’ should have money thrown at them to help reverse the trend.  It would be much cheaper to fund more community based exercise programs or healthy cooking classes, compared to paying for the hospital care of an obese cardiac patients whose life-time of ill-health will cost tax-payers much more in the long-term.
