Weight Loss Myths

The problem with trying to lose weight is that it is so confusing!  I mean, there is so much conflicting information about diets, nutrition and weight loss, it’s hard to know fact from fiction.  In today’s blog I want to ‘clear up’ some common weight loss myths so you know what NOT to do.

Fad / Shake diets are not a safe or effective solution for long-term weight loss:  Any ‘diet’ that promotes semi-starvation, fasting or drinking shakes can help you to lose weight fast – in the short term.  The problem is that the weight you lose will come back very quickly once you stop the ‘diet’.  Fad diets are a quick fix – and the more fad diets you try, the more likely your weight is to yo-yo.  The key to permanent weight loss is steady weight loss, sensible eating and lifestyle education, so you know exactly how to keep your weight off once you get to your goal.

Low-fat or fat-free foods may still be high in calories, even if the fat content is reduced: If you find you are purchasing foods labelled low-fat because you believe they are better for your waistline, best you think again!  The problem with low-fat foods is that while the fat content is reduced (compared to the full-fat option), the ‘missing’ fat is replaced with extra sugar to improve the taste.  This results in a high-sugar containing food which will have the same (if not more) calories than its’ full-fat counterpart.

Skipping meals is not an effective way to lose weight:  If you are missing breakfast, thinking that this will be helping your weight loss efforts, you need to reconsider!  Skipping breakfast actually slows down your metabolism.  Why?  Because your body needs some energy to ensure your metabolism is ‘kick-started’ for the day.  Not only that, your blood sugar levels will be dropping all morning, so by the time lunch comes around, you will be totally ravenous.  This leads to you making bad food choices, often for something high in sugar or starchy carbs so you can bring those flailing blood sugar levels up as quickly as possible – and these kinds of foods are a dieting disaster.
