Lose Weight in Winter

It’s official – this winter is one of the coldest we have had in a long time!  However, this does not mean your weight loss efforts have to stop.  Winter can actually be one of the best times to lose weight – so read on to find out how you can shed the extra kilos and look fabulous for Spring.

Your metabolism actually increases in the cold weather – it’s the truth.  Your body has a core temperature of 37 degrees, but when it’s cold your body needs to work harder to keep it at this ‘normal’ level.  So in Winter your metabolism is naturally boosted thanks to the cooler temperatures outside.  How good is that?  In order to enhance your metabolism even further, rug up and exercise in the great outdoors.  We all know that exercise helps you to burn more calories, but doing it in Winter can boost your metabolism to super-charged levels.

The problem with having a higher metabolic rate in Winter is that it can make you hungrier – and if you are not careful, this is when your increased appetite can lead to an expanding waistline.  It’s important to be prepared for this and ensure you eat healthy meals and snacks so your appetite is satisfied BUT you are not gaining any extra weight.  Here are some great ideas for winter warming foods:

1-      Forget salads, eat HOT meals.  Meals that are heated are much more satisfying in winter meaning you won’t overeat.   Make sure you add ‘warming’ spices – like chilli, ginger, curry, paprika etc – to your meals.  Slow cookers are great at this time of year:  add a can of chopped tomatoes & spices to a mix of low-carbohydrate containing vegetables and some diced lean meat and set on slow for up to 6 hours (or more).  A delicious, healthy meal that cooks while you are at work (just don’t serve with creamy mashed potato!)

2-      Eat lots of soups!!!  We have some great soup recipes in our Recipe Book.  If you are busy during the week, get into the habit of making up a pot of soup on the weekend and then storing it in 5 plastic containers in your fridge:  this takes care of lunch during the week!

3-      Drink lots of herbal hot teas (The Natural Way herbal tea being the drink of choice of course).  Get into the habit of drinking a cup of hot water with lemon squeezed into it first thing in the morning.  This is a great kidney & liver flush and prepares you gut for digestion before you have breakfast.

4- If you feel like something sweet, Jarrah do a great instant hot chocolate that is low in sugar and calories.  Just mix 2 teaspoons in a mug of boiling water and sip slowly.  It’s like having a chocolate fix without the calories.
