Let Them Eat Cake (Not Fruit)

I wanted to continue my blog with further information about ‘Smart Shopping’, however I stumbled across an article this week that I need to share with you – purely because I am totally horrified!  The latest data released by the Australian Health Survey has shown a worrying trend with our dietary habits – it seems that cake & biscuits are more commonly consumed on a daily basis than fruit.

That’s right – the latest figures released show that 68% of adults eat biscuits and cakes daily compared to only 58% of adults who eat fruit every day.  The news gets worse however:  the amount of people eating enough fruit and vegetables every day is positively dismal.  Only 1 in 14 people (7%) eating the recommended serves of fruit and vegetables daily, with one in four adults reported eating no vegetables and more than 40% having no fruit (read more here:  http://www.ausleisure.com.au/news/australians-eating-more-cakes-than-fruit/ ).

Seriously, what’s happening with the Australian diet?  If you cast your mind back to Year 8 Home Economics, you will remember that the Healthy Food Pyramid tells us to eat most of our diet from ‘fruit and vegetables’.  Since when did ‘cake and biscuits’ replace ‘fruit and vegetables’?  No wonder obesity has replaced smoking as the number one killer disease in Australia today.

With all this talk of tightening our belts now the tough new federal budget has been announced, I also can’t believe that more people are buying uneconomical cakes and biscuits rather than fruit.  Take $20 down to your closest fruit & vege shop (or better still, your local Farmers’ Market) and you will be amazed at how much vitamin & mineral-packed fruit you can buy.  However, that same $20 at The Cheesecake Shop will buy you ONLY one cake which contains NO healthy nutrients only excess sugar and fat!
