How do you spot a fad diet?  It’s easy!  Typically, fad diets share at least one (or more) of the following characteristics:

  • Contains meal replacement shakes and / or prepackaged foods
  • Promotes severe calorie restriction
  • Will promise GREAT weight loss in a short time frame
  • Often will be a passing ‘trend’ – when was the last time you heard about a friend doing the Israeli Army diet?

The problem with fad diets is how they can make you feel. In the short term, some fad diets may make you feel weak & faint, extremely hungry and tired.  However, your body may be suffering more than you think.  Prolonged periods of fad dieting can also cause dehydration, nausea, headaches, muscle cramps (due to lack of important minerals) and constipation or diarrohea.

However, for long term fad diet followers, the greatest damage is to their metabolism.  Prolonged deprivation of REAL food and adequate vitamins & minerals can have a negative effect on your metabolism.  Your body’s metabolism will actually slow itself down and go into ‘starvation’ mode as it works to conserve the energy it is receiving.  Unfortunately, then, when you go back to normal eating habits, you usually pile the weight you lost back on very quickly.
