Lifestyle – not Diet – May Be Reason Behind Weight Gain

Slow Down:  Take time to chew your meal slowly so your body has got time to actually register that you are eating.  Slowing down when you eat allows the receptors in your stomach lining to signal to your brain that you are full.  As a result, you have a chance to feel ‘satisfied’ which means you will eat less.

Turn Off the TV:  If you eat your evening meal in front of the television, then you may be guilty of ‘distracting’ your brain from the job at hand: this means that you may be consuming more than you intended to without realizing it.  Long nights in front of the TV can lead to mindless eating, particularly if you are subjected to advertisements featuring food.  Create a TV-less place to eat your evening meal and, once finished, move to the couch to settle down and watch your favourite program. In fact, if you declare the couch a food-free zone then you will not find yourself snacking after dinner.

No More Diet Soft-Drinks:  You may think that drinking artificially sweetened fizzy drinks is great for your waistline…but it isn’t!  Unfortunately, diet soft-drinks stimulate your taste buds to ‘want’ something sweet due to the roller-coaster effect this has on your blood sugar levels.  Drinking water will not cause this blood sugar imbalance and has an appetite calming effect at the same time.

Find a Hobby:   The busier you are the less time you’ll have to think about food.  So find a hobby that you like and, preferably, that allows for interaction with others.  Being content – both emotionally and socially – makes choosing healthy foods easier.  Best of all, if you join a team sport you will also be taking part in an activity that will help to burn the excess calories too.
