More Exercise Needed to Beat Battle of the Bulge

It’s no secret that Australia is in the grips of an obesity epidemic.  Health experts are working together to try and ‘fight’ the battle of the bulge and, as a result, have recently revised the guidelines for the recommended  time spent exercising  each week.  The Australian Guidelines, released in 1999, suggested that 150 minutes of exercise was adequate:  however, the new guidelines suggest that we do 300 minutes a week!  Read more here:   http://www.abc.net.au/health/thepulse/stories/2014/02/12/3942684.htm

300 minutes a week equates to 5 hours (or just over 42 minutes per day) – and this exercise should be at moderate intensity which means you should be puffing.  It seems like a lot of spare time you have to find to get your body moving if you want to achieve the new target.  But you will be surprised at how much spare time you have when you think about it.

For example, if you spend time on the couch at night watching TV, why not buy a cheap second hand stationary bike and pedal away while you watch your favourite programs?  Exercising while you watch TV makes the time go so fast – just remember to vary the intensity from time to time so you are getting a decent workout.  Maybe cycling isn’t your thing, so get a treadmill instead.  If your budget is a little tight right now, just try running on the spot while your program is on – set a timer to do 2 mins running, 1 minute rest.  This regime will see you do 40 minutes of exercise every hour:  almost your daily recommended minimum!

The other way to increase activity in your day is to change your socializing habits.  Instead of meeting a friend at a café for a catch up, tell her to meet you at a park and wear her running shoes.  A brisk walk together will give you plenty of time to catch up and stay healthy at the same time.
