What is acid versus alkaline?: you probably haven’t thought about since high school science lessons, but it is something that natural therapists talk about in regard to the diet & good health. In order to measure of the acidity or alkalinity of anything, we need to measure its pH. pH is measured on a scale between 0-14. Solutions with a pH less than 7 are said to be acidic and solutions with a pH greater than 7 are basic or alkaline. Pure water has a pH around 7.
Blood pH usually remains within a very narrow range i.e. between 7.3-7.5. In order for the blood pH to stay within a normal range, the body may have to adjust its function to either remove the excess acid / alkaline levels. Acid / Alkaline levels in the body are dependent on the food you eat.
When our body consumes and breakdowns food, energy is derived from foods by oxidation, which produces a residue or ash. Some foods leave an ‘acid ash’ (from acid forming foods) and some leave an ‘alkaline ash’ (from alkaline forming foods). Foods that commonly contain alkaline minerals, and leave an alkaline ash are fresh fruits and vegetables. Whereas foods that contain minerals that leave an acid ash are commonly foods high in sugars, saturated fats and red meats (and make our urine very acidic as a result).
A diet high in acid-forming foods can contribute to a range of conditions including cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, immune deficiencies, acceleration free radical damage, premature aging, and osteoporosis. Acidic environments also encourage the growth of fungus, bacteria and viruses. You need a higher intake of alkaline foods than acid-producing ones in your diet to ensure your best health.
