Biggest Loser Finale Gives Freak Results

Ok, so here we go again, another post about The Biggest Loser – but it may be the last one for a while.  This week, the Biggest Loser officially ends with the Grand Finale show being aired on Tuesday 28th May.  I love watching this show every year:  we get to see how well the contestants have done at home, away from the controlled environment of The Biggest Loser house.  I am constantly amazed at how much weight some of the contestants have lost over the years – but is it realistic?

The results of some of the past winners have been absolutely mind-blowing.  The best weight loss result ever by an Australian contestant was achieved by Bob Herdsmen who, in 2009, lost an incredible 87.6kg, which was 52.21% of his starting weight.  Now this might be ok, if this was over a period of 18 months or more, but no…the actual time from the show commencing filming to its’ finish is around 6 months (though it is difficult to find out exactly how long the duration is – a little-known fact that is not publicized on The Biggest Loser website, however I did find an American website which quoted this as the approximate time frame!).  Losing over 50% of your body weight in 6 months is just CRAZY, abnormal and to be honest, totally unachievable to the average person.

Of course, the reason the contestants lose weight like this is because they are in a house where all they do is exercise – it is estimated that most contestants do around 3 hours of exercise per day!  No wonder the weight loss is incredible:  however, the problem with losing weight so quickly is that you will find it extremely difficult to keep off.  The other problem, of course, is that you do run the risk of losing valuable muscle as well as fat, because your body is ‘burning’ calories so quickly.  Of course, then, putting the weight back on is a huge possibility – there is no way the average person can find time to train that much back in the ‘real’ world.  In fact, I have written about this in the past ( https://loseweightwithsue.wordpress.com/2011/10/25/ruth-is-back-on-the-weight-loss-treadmill/)

The best way to lose weight is The Natural Way – we offer a program which fits in with your lifestyle (and no need to exercise 3 hours a day!).  Not only that, your consultant is there with you every step of the way:  your personal weekly weigh-in sessions are a great opportunity to monitor your progress, adjust your program (if necessary), resolve any difficulties you may be having and motivate you to keep going.  We do not promise you will lose a huge amount of every week – rather, you will lose weight in a sensible fashion which will ensure you the best chance to keep it off – for life.
