For most of us, we spend 40+ hours a week at work and the eating habits you adopt during your working day can have a massive impact on your health. For example, if you frequent fast food places for lunch, the constant consumption of excess calories and fat will impact badly on your waistline. Also, the lack of vitamins and minerals in fast food can make your nutrient-dependent immune system more vulnerable to nasty bugs causing you to be more prone to colds and flu.
Eating well at work is not that difficult: you just need to think ahead and be organized. With winter literally around the corner, take a little time on the weekend to make a big pot of soup (refer to our Recipe Book for some great soup ideas). When cooled, separate into plastic containers and freeze – a little cooking on the weekend means you have lunch already made for the week. Not only is taking your own soup to work much healthier, you will also save a fortune by NOT buying your lunch every day.
If soup is not your thing, then make sure you visit your local greengrocer on the weekend. Stock up on plenty of salad vegetables (and some fruit too). Then, on Sunday evening, get a large plastic container and break up 6-8 lettuce leaves, ½ continental cucumber (sliced), ½ red capsicum (sliced into narrow strips) and 2-3 tomatoes (sliced)..you could add more to this of course! This salad will be enough for at least 2-3 lunches – you just need to ensure you have some protein with it. Keep some cans of tuna or salmon at work, and finish your lovely fresh salad lunch with a piece of fruit.
If you didn’t have time to prepare your lunch at home and are forced to buy, just ensure you make the healthiest choices. Good options include sushi or sandwich bars that can prepare you a fresh meat and salad wrap / sandwich. If you are having a day where you are not really hungry, try a skim milk banana smoothie (with a scoop of protein powder) from a juice bar – these can honestly keep you full for hours!
The main thing to remember is that to maintain good health, you need to eat at least 5 serves of vegetables and 2 pieces of fruit per day. If you can consume most of this during your working day, then you will place yourself in a good position to maintain your ideal weight and stay healthy.
Don’t be suckered into sneaky sugary biscuits when the 3pm slump hits. Instead, keep a stash of raw almonds at work and nibble on them. These help to satisfy your appetite for longer and maintain a better stabilization of your blood sugar levels.
