Shake Diet = Starvation Diet

If your new years’ resolution is to lose weight, and you have been thinking about trying one of the many ‘shake’ diets on the market, then I am really glad you are reading this blog today before you have made the purchase. 

Shake diets are nothing new – in fact, they pretty much follow the same formula i.e. a meal-replacement shake for breakfast and lunch and then eating a portion controlled dinner (consisting usually of a serve of protein and green, low-carb vegetables).  But is this diet really a great idea?  Well, no if you want to not starve and remain ‘healthy’ while you lose weight.

What do I mean by healthy?  Well, take a good close look at the ingredients on the label of a popular shake sachet.  In the example below, I have listed the ingredients and to put it bluntly, this shake is nothing more than an overprocessed collection of tasteless additives, with 3 different types of sugar!

INGREDIENTS:  Milk Solids, Fructose, Vegetable Fat, Coffee Powder (3%), Glucose Syrup Solids, Maltodextrin, Thickeners (407, 1442), Colour (150C), Flavours (wheat derived), Minerals (Magnesium oxide, ferrous sulphate, zinc oxide, potassium iodide), emulsifiers (339, 471, 472C, 450), Vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, E, Folate, Niacin), Free Flow Agent (551), Antioxidant (306).

It gets worse – this shake sachet contains only a tiny 203 cals!  If you are following the recommended guidelines of this shake diet that means until you eat your dinner you have only consumed 406 cals for the day!  This simply is not enough for busy people – in fact, most of us would be downright starving by lunchtime, and ready to eat your mobile phone by afternoon tea!
