There is no denying it – Australians are becoming more concerned about their weight and are resorting to very unhealthy practices in order to control what the scales say.
Results from a recent study show that the incidence of eating disorders in Australia has doubled in the last 10 years. Study leader Philippa Hay, head of psychiatry at James Cook University says, “The study showed the number of people with regular eating disorder behavior – binge eating being the most common – had ballooned from 4.7% to 11% in the past ten years.”
Phillipa continues, “Those with full-blown eating disorders – like anorexia nervosa and bulimia – has also grown in the last decade from 2 percent to 4.6. This is an alarming trend which shows these problems are being felt more widely than first thought”.
While women are five times more likely to have a disorder compared to men, it seems that there is a sharp rise in males with eating problems.
It is of no surprise that the research has uncovered such a trend in the last ten (10) years. The pressure on vulnerable young girls to look ‘model’ perfect is enormous, even though the pictures they see in magazines have been digitally enhanced and airbrushed. Resorting to unhealthy eating practices to attain the impossible will then lead to a dangerous inclination to adopt practices like starving or bingeing-purging, and this can become damaging both physically and psychologically in the long term”.
