Stress and Your Weight.

Unfortunately, as a result of the hectic pace of our busy lifestyles, our levels of stress seems to be sky-rocketing higher than petrol prices.   Stress is certainly one of those unavoidable parts of life that affects all people to differing degrees – and how you ‘cope’ with stress can have a huge impact on your weight.  Recent research findings are showing that there is a definite link between weight gain and high stress levels.    

Stress may cause weight gain because stress makes the body create a hormone called cortisol.  High levels of cortisol are linked to an increase in abdominal fat, which means if your stress levels are high, you are likely to develop fat around the ‘belly’.  This is why once pear-shaped types may become more apple-shaped.  Apple shaped body types are more at risk for life threatening conditions such as diabetes, stroke, cancer, and heart disease than their pear-shaped counterparts.   And it seems that the more belly fat you have, the more cortisol you make, which just compounds the weight around the abdomen  problem!     

The other problem with excessive stress levels is that it has a definite impact on what you eat.  Stress often causes us to reach for familiar comfort foods such as high fat, high sugar, and high carbohydrate foods like cookies, cake and chocolate.  The chewing and the good feelings that we get (temporarily) from eating these foods may make us feel less stressed out for a while, but eating to relieve stress causes weight gain.  Why do we reach for these foods when we are stressed?  Studies have shown that the people that tended to eat more when under stress were the ones secreting more of the stress hormone, cortisol, therefore again showing that stress and weight gain are related.  It really seems that the stress, cortisol and weight gain cycle may be a difficult to break – but fortunately, The Natural Way can offer an effective solution to stress induced weight gain.
