Julie Goodwin, winner of the first series of Masterchef, has recently spoken out to blast the ‘fat police’ and thinks that the weight loss industry makes people feel ‘miserable and deprived’.

Julie, who is launching her latest home-style cook book, admits to being on many diets in the past but has now accepted that her body will always be ‘curvy’ and she does not intend to give up ‘bad’ food to lose weight.

Julie’s new book, “The Heart of the Home” is certainly a testimony to her vow to not deprive herself of any food:  in fact, there is a recipe for Creamy Bacon Fettuccine in her book which has 300ml of cream, pasta and bacon…no doubt, very tasty but a disaster for those watching their weight due to the high levels of saturated fat and calories in the recipe!

The fact is Julie, it ISN’T ok to be overweight – there is numerous scientific studies that prove that if you are overweight, you are at greater risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, certain kinds of cancers, arthritis…the list goes on.  And it’s not only the health issues associated with being overweight:  having low energy levels, poor self-esteem, a feeling of ‘missing out’ on activities other people can participate in are all common ‘side effects’ of carrying excess kilograms.  So while Julie says not to deprive yourself of any foods, doesn’t she realise that being overweight can deprive you of having the life you really want?

    What a shame that Julie doesn’t realise the implications of being overweight – I can only hope that Julie learns before it is too late…… Health is not something we can get from the supermarket shelf some time in the future, we need to be mindful of our ongoing health as it all adds up. And moderation is the key – have those calorie-laden foods as a treat but keep to a good basic healthy plan in the majority of the time.
