High GI Foods = High Health Risk

A diet concentrated in white bread, potatoes and other high Glycaemic Index (GI) foods have been proven to cause premature death, by increasing risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes.  High GI foods are those which cause high blood glucose & insulin spikes, creating instability in blood sugar levels in the long term.

A recent article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, analysed over 37 studies carried out on GI diets over the last decade.  There was overwhelming proof that high GI diets are highly hazardous to your health.  Researchers concluded that constant high blood sugar and insulin levels, can literally ‘wear out’ the pancreas, making it very likely that Type 2 diabetes will develop.  Also, there was a ‘strong relationship’ between high GI foods and common serious diseases like cancer and heart disease.

Unfortunately, high GI foods are becoming a ‘staple’ in our diet rather than an occasional ‘treat’. Generally, foods that are processed and / or contain large amounts of sugar  are High GI – this includes soft drink, cakes & biscuits made with white flour, hot chips and other over-processed takeaway foods.  As these foods are becoming a more convenient option for people with busy lives, we are consuming more High GI foods than ever before.  It’s no coincidence then that the incidence of Type 2 diabetes and obesity are at the highest levels ever recorded in Australian history.  In fact, you could say that Australians are literally eating themselves into an early grave.
